France - A ruling against crucifixes in Italian classrooms has been handed down by the the European Court of Human Rights. The Strasbourg court opined that the display of a cross ran counter to the child's right to religious freedom, violates the parent's rights to educate their child as they saw fit and also restricted the rights of children to believe or not to believe.
The Italian government says it will appeal against the decision. Education Minister Mariastella Gelmini said the crucifix was a "symbol of our tradition."
